Civil engineering solutions provider Concor Infrastructure, formerly known as Murray & Roberts Infrastructure, says it is well positioned to take advantage of the recent increase in optimism in the mining space, with company representatives poised to attend the 2018 Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town from February 5 to 8.

A subsidiary of Concor Construction – which was acquired by a consortium led by Southern Palace Group in April last year, Concor Infrastructure has secured two significant contracts in the mining sector.

In December, MD Eric Wisse announced that Concor Infrastructure was awarded the Belfast Implementation project for South Africa-based diversified miner Exxaro’s new coal operation in Mpumalanga.

The 22-month contract comprises major bulk earthworks and civil infrastructure that will be the enabling works for the mining operation. It also includes the upgrading of a provincial gravel road to a tarred road that will facilitate access to the mine.

Wisse said the company’s extensive experience in mining infrastructure projects will allow its teams to leverage this expertise when working on the project.

“We also secured the contract for the earthworks and civils for the boxcut at [Canadian diversified miner] Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef mine, in Limpopo,” Wisse commented. This project is for the first stage of the Shaft 2 project and, as of December, the site mobilisation of Concor Infrastructure’s team had already begun.

Wisse explained that Shaft 2 will become the main production shaft for the Platreef platinum-group metals mine in the near future. Concor Infrastructure’s initial scope of work involves the excavation of a surface boxcut to 29 m below surface and the construction of a concrete hitch for the head frame. The 103 m structure will house the shaft’s permanent hoisting facilities and support the shaft collar.

According to Ivanhoe’s website, Shaft 2 will have an internal diameter of 10 m and the capacity to hoist six-million tonnes a year. First production is expected in 2022. Additionally, the miner states that “early-works” for the surface construction for Shaft 2 began in May 2016 and are expected to be concluded by the third quarter of this year.

Wisse noted that Concor Infrastructure also received a contract for road rehabilitation on the Bakwena highway, on the section from Pumulani Plaza to Hammanskraal. Over the last five years, the company has worked on the Bakwena highway on sections stretching from Pretoria northwards. The work involves asphalt milling and asphalt inlay and overlay work.

He added that work “continues apace” on the company’s other major roads projects in the Eastern Cape, North West, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Concor Infrastructure is headquartered in Johannesburg, with multiple project sites located across Southern Africa. The business is a Level 1 broad-based black economic-empowerment contributor and is internationally accredited.
