ABOUT GOINDUSTRY DOVEBID SA

There comes a time in every organisation when a surplus arises – i.e. assets or inventory that no longer serves a lucrative purpose. Specialising in traditional on-site and online auctions, GoIndustry DoveBid SA is the trusted expert in auctioneering, connecting buyers and sellers to transform that surplus into new opportunities for both parties. “Online auctions enable the seller to reach a wider audience, while in turn giving buyers from across the world the opportunity to place their bid on big ticket items, like this diamond mine in the Palapye Region”, says John Taylor.

Benefits of an online auction:

  • Buyers can participate in the auction from anywhere in the world, at any given time.
  • Product information is available in one central location and therefore easily accessible.
  • On-site event needs to be hosted, which in turn saves the sellers money.
  • Buyers need not travel long distances to participate in the auction.
  • Products do not need to be moved to one central location for an auction to be held.
  • Products can be stored at multiple locations for viewing purposes.

ABOUT LERALA DIAMOND MINE LTD

The region was first explored by De Beers Prospecting Botswana (PTY) Ltd in 1988, a process which primarily involved soil sampling across the entire area. This continued through to 1991 and aided De Beers in relinquishing 50% of the “barren” areas, and led to the discovery of eight kimberlite intrusions, grouped in two distinct clusters. The eastern cluster had little diamond potential whereas the western cluster was prioritised for detailed evaluation in 1992.

Following the kimberlite discovery and evaluation thereof, a special vehicle company, held 85% by De Beers Botswana and 15% by the State, was formed to undertake a trial mining exercise of the five kimberlites to ascertain grade. Mining took place from April 1997 to December 2000, and within that same month De Beers concluded that the mine was economically viable.

Following De Beers’ withdrawal from Lerala Mine, DiamonEx was granted the prospecting licences in 2002, and bulk sampling and large diameter drilling started in May 2004. The results of the bulk sampling evaluation led to the DiamonEx board’s decision to construct and commission the 200tph DMS plant. In 2010 DiamonEx was acquired by Mantle Diamonds, and later on the mine was sold to the Australian firm Kimberly Diamonds Ltd in 2013. In July 2015, the board of diamond miner Kimberley Diamonds approved the restart of mining activities at the Lerala mine, paving the way for a prosperous future – a future which could soon be yours.

Lerala Mine has reached a number of impressive milestones, many of which were achieved in the scope of a single year. The first kimberlite ore was mined on 21 April 2016, which was fed into the plant on 30 April 2016. In the same year, the mining team completed their first blast (23 April) and the first diamonds were recovered on 2 May 2016. Kimberlite is an igneous rock that occurs in the Earth's crust, at depths greater than any other igneous rock type. The rock generally forms in vertical structures known as kimberlite pipes, which sometimes contains diamonds – in fact, kimberlite pipes are the most important source of mined diamonds today. Despite its relative rarity, kimberlite has attracted attention because it serves as a carrier of diamonds and garnet peridotite mantle xenoliths to the Earth's surface. Lerala Mine comprises not one but five of these diamondiferous kimberlite pipes, ranging from 0.16 hectares to 2.35 hectares.
