Local mobile and semi-mobile crushing and screening equipment provider Pilot Crushtec has expanded its product lineup to the Southern African mining market with the addition of Swedish brand Jonsson’s crushers and screens.

The range complements the company’s existing offering of Metso equipment, particularly filling the gap of large-scale premium crushing and screening requirements with tracked units in the region.

Pilot Crushtec sales and marketing director Francois Marais says the company will initially supply products that cater to the premium, high-tonnage, heavy-duty crushing segment which are ideally suited for demanding customers that appreciate high quality, high production and high operating efficiencies.

Jonsson has traditionally operated in the Nordic region, but is expanding its footprint globally, while ensuring that its machinery is suited to the climate requirements of each region – including the dry and hot conditions that are typical to Southern Africa.

To date, Jonsson has supplied more than 350 tracked machines and 400 wheeled units globally.

The brand is leveraging Metso’s existing partnership with Pilot Crushtec to grow its market share in the Southern Africa region.

Jonsson sales and marketing director Mickael Delbrandt says the brand can offer the Southern African market lower operating costs, higher productivity and ease of transport.

In turn, Pilot Crushtec aims to expand its offering to cater for the large-scale, premium crushing and screening market, with one of the products, in particular, offering the benefit of replacing three individual machines with one multifunctional machine.

Marais explains that the Jonsson L 120-330 double crusher is a unique offering in that it combines the ability of the C120 jaw crusher, GP330 cone crushers and a screen on one compact tracked chassis – which is the only mobile unit of its kind available.

He adds that, where customers would traditionally need to mobilise and run three separate machines, an entire plant can now be run on one compact chassis, which introduces the benefits of one machine to transport and maintain, as well as higher productivity for lower fuel use.

This is a major benefit for mining contractors who place value on ease of plant movement on and between sites. Once on site, the double crusher can be mobilised and start production quicker compared with a traditional fixed plant.

Marais states that the lead time for most Jonsson products would be six months.

Pilot Crushtec’s targeted focus on crushing and screening has allowed the company to develop a profound understanding of the sector, which distinguishes this supplier’s ability to forge long-lasting relationships with their customers in the region.

Owing to the company being familiar with Metso crushers, it already has the expertise to service and support the Jonsson machines.

As part of the new product launch, Marais tells Mining Weekly that the company will be engaging with its existing large-scale mining customers to introduce the Jonsson brand of equipment, emphasising particularly the maintenance, installation and environmental benefits.

Pilot Crushtec carefully considered which of the Jonsson products would be suited to the Southern African mining industry and which would offer a unique solution to complement the company’s existing range of products.

The Jonsson range of machines includes tracked crushers and screens, double crushers and screens, feeders and conveyors.

Pilot Crushtec will be offering two heavy-duty Jonsson jaw crushers – L 150 and L 160, three large Jonsson mobile cone crushers – L400, L550D and L500D, as well as the Jonsson L 354 mobile screen.

The jaw crushers, for example, can accommodate up to 1 m feed size material and crush at a rate of between 800 t/h and 1 000 t/h.

To illustrate the sheer size of one of the machines, Marais explains the biggest mobile crusher in the Southern African market currently weighs 75 t, while Jonsson's largest mobile jaw crusher weighs 186 t.

Notably, they are all dual-powered and can run fully electric off grid power, which Marais says can cater to customers looking to transition to electrified operations away from diesel.

The electric-powered double crusher, in particular, has a much lower environmental impact compared with a traditional mobile plant.

Moreover, the Jonsson machines can be monitored from a control centre.

The machines gather and show data on capacity, fuel consumption and plant utilisation. Additionally, it can generate environmental reports to assess the impact of the machines on the environment.

Marais concludes that, by having Metso and Jonsson among its lineup of products, it can offer unmatched crushing capability in the Southern African region.
