DOUGLAS KATIVU IN CONVERSATION WITH MINING WEEKLY ONLINE

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Sustainable reporting organisation Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI’s) Africa regional conference will bring together hundreds of experts and provide a platform for enhancing the value of sustainability reporting and encouraging greater levels of corporate disclosure and accountability, GRI Focal Point South Africa head Douglas Kativu has said.

The overarching theme of the conference, to be held at advisory firm EY’s offices, in Sandton, on May 12 and 13, would be ‘Transformation through Transparency’.

Kativu told Mining Weekly Online on Thursday that mining companies in Africa and South Africa, were generally viewed as leaders in terms of sustainability reporting and with regards to bridging differences with community stakeholders.

However, he said that, despite the increased levels of transparency, and positive governance and accountability ratings achieved by some of the leading mining companies, challenges such as regional social justice and environmental practices remained a concern.

“The GRI Africa regional conference will provide a platform for sustainability and development practitioners, thought leaders, policy-makers and business leaders – including mining companies – to share ideas and practical experiences, with the overall aim of ensuring corporate accountability and overcoming industry related transparency challenges,” stated Kativu.

He added that sustainability reporting created value for all stakeholders if implemented correctly.
