PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian government has flagged a memorandum of understanding between green hydrogen developer Infinite Green Energy (IGE) and Samsung C&T to develop and build the Arrowsmith hydrogen plant.

Located 30 km south of Dongara, the wind- and solar-powered plant is forecast to produce up to 300 t/d of green hydrogen, or 100 000 t/y for domestic and export markets.

Green hydrogen will be produced using a combination of renewable energy from 65 MW solar and 132 MW wind, displacing 118 000 t of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The project is expected to come online in 2025 and will serve the domestic Western Australian energy and transport markets.

The Arrowsmith Stage II is an expansion that includes the production of up to 42 t/d.

“The government welcomes this exciting development which sees Western Australia progress as a significant producer, exporter and user of this emerging renewable energy source,” Hydrogen Industry Minister Roger Cook said.

“Partnerships like these are vital to the delivery of the 2030 vision under the Western Australian Renewable Hydrogen Strategy and future opportunities that come with it.

“With the crucial need to diversify and decarbonise here and around the world, the government is committed to the renewable hydrogen sector to help reduce emissions to achieve net zero greenhouse emissions,” Cook added.

IGE is aiming to be Australia's first zero carbon commercial hydrogen producer.

IGE is also progressing the Northam MEG HP1, another renewable hydrogen project in development with Samsung C&T.
