Focussing energy, resources in securing S Africa’s mineral resources

The second Annual Mine Security conference, hosted by women-owned Pinpoint Stewards, will take place from 21 to 22 June, 2023, at the Indaba Hotel, in Fourways, Johannesburg.

The conference is specifically designed to tackle the deteriorating security conditions around mining and infrastructure to protect and secure South Africa’s mineral resources as a united front against criminal activities and corruption. The speakers and panellists will include industry leaders, security experts, law enforcement and academia who have made notable strides in their respective roles within mine security.

Alongside the conference will be a technology showcase to share the latest technologies to strengthen mine security efforts. Backing the event as sponsor and exhibitor is Optex Security EMEA, sharing their latest mine security technologies.   Media partners have also come on board to ensure visibility and reporting on the event and the critical nature of the matter of mine security.

Collaboration is a key focus point of the conference and a panel discussing intelligence sharing to fight illegal mining and security issues as a united front, against criminal activities will include panellists: Brigadier (Ret) Nash Lutchman, Executive VP & Head: Group Protection Services, Sibanye – Stillwater; Major General Alfred Khana Component Head: Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation and Elfin Harmse, Senior Manager, Protection Services SA Gold Operations, Sibanye-Stillwater.

Highlighting the effect of the international buyers-market on the proliferation of illegal mining in South Africa and efforts by the Hawks to mitigate the impact on the mining industry, will be delivered by Brigadier HF Flynn, Provincial Commander: Serious Organised Crime Investigations, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). World Gold Council Senior Adviser Edward Bickham will be responding to the growth of illegal and informal artisanal and small-scale mining across sub-Saharan Africa - via video conference. Anglo American Platinum Security GM Wayne Hackart will be sharing his insights on security risk in mining: a complex new chapter looking into aspects such as communities and extortion, the procurement mafia and future fit security. Organised criminal attack targeting non-ferrous metal - copper cable in particular will be the focal point of the presentation delivered by Marthinus Taljaard Senior Manager Protection Services: SA PGM Operations Sibanye-Stillwater. Fritz Krüger, Mining Loss & Risk Mitigator, will address effective mine asset protection and risk mitigation.

Open forum discussions will also provide an opportunity for delegates to contribute and share their insights, challenges and future solutions in navigating through the attacks made on the mining landscape. This annual platform is not-to-be-missed and is driven towards sustainable change in mine security.
