Canadian Malartic announces First Nations agreement

The Canadian Malartic Mine (CMM), in Quebec, has announced a collaborative agreement with four First Nations, which will seek to increase their participation in CMM’s mining activities and projects.

The agreement is said to be the first of its kind in Abitibi-Temiscamingue between Anishinabeg First Nations and a mining company in operation.

The collaboration agreement sets out measures to increase the participation of the four Anishinabeg First Nations in CMM's activities in regards to training, job and business opportunities, and environmental protection until 2027.

The four communities will also receive yearly financial contributions in order to promote their sustainable development and to enable the establishment of community-building projects.

CMM is owned by Toronto-listed miners Agnico Eagle and Yamana Gold.
