Former Teck CEO joins BHP board as Cockerill exits

Don Lindsay

Global mining powerhouse BHP on Thursday announced that Don Lindsay, the former CEO of Teck Resources, would join its board on May 1 as a nonexecutive director.

With a 17-year tenure at the helm of Teck, Lindsay brings to BHP a wealth of experience in global resource development, growth strategies and a steadfast commitment to community health, safety and education, said chairperson Ken MacKenzie in a statement.

In tandem with Lindsay’s appointment, Ian Cockerill has confirmed his retirement from the board. Cockerill’s departure follows his recent appointment as CEO of Endeavour Mining, a gold company listed in London and Toronto. Given the demands of his new executive role, Cockerill has chosen to step down from BHP’s board.

MacKenzie expressed gratitude for Cockerill’s invaluable contributions, noting his extensive technical and operational expertise across various commodities, which proved instrumental during a period of significant transformation for BHP.

The news of Lindsay's appointment and Cockerill's retirement comes shortly after the announcement of Ross McEwan as a nonexecutive director, effective April 3.
