Gold Fields reports fatality at South Deep

Gold Fields' South Deep mine

JSE- and NYSE-listed Gold Fields has reported the death of an employee at its South Deep mine, in Gauteng, following a mining accident on June 3.

Abel Magajane, a shaft timberman, succumbed from injuries sustained after falling down a reef ore-pass.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has been advised of the tragic accident and an in loco inspection, led by the department with trade union representatives and mine management, is being undertaken.

The company reports that this was the first fatality at Gold Fields in a year and comes amid significant improvements in the group’s safety performance over the past six years.

South Deep’s human resources team is providing assistance to the deceased employee’s family, who will also be supported in accordance with a range of the mine’s policies.
