Southern Africa working together on green hydrogen front is right way to go

A dozen scientists from the Southern African Development Community will be travelling to Germany in May to obtain in-depth insight into green hydrogen, the clean fuel that is derived from Southern Africa’s superior sunshine, prime wind and available land. At the same time, steps are being accelerated to ensure that the price of green hydrogen becomes more affordable, amid its status of being embedded as more sustainable than any other on offer.

Southern Africa’s Namibia-based science service centre for climate change and adaptive land management, Sasscal, has done crucially important ground work in all this, helped by comprehensive and far-reaching support from Germany, which is so useful. Intensive skills development has been under way for some time now with a large number of green hydrogen scholarships already awarded. In addition, pilot plants have been proceeding to provide invaluable research for entry into commercial activity.
